Nev Jones Event on “AOT”

Advocacy

On February 12, 2026, Nev Jones offered a brilliant presentation on “Assisted Outpatient Treatment” or “AOT” (what we call “Involuntary Outpatient Commitment”) for the Roots Up community. With over 100 people registered, the event was well attended with lots of questions and great information offered.

Nev did an exceptional job detailing the history and available research of Involuntary Outpatient Commitment and even made a detailed handout for attendees that you can view here.

By the end of the event, there really was no question that evidence overwhelmingly tells us that IOC is not getting positive outcomes and has the potential to cause great harm in many people’s lives. One of the most telling quotes of the event included: “The gold standard of research in the field of mental health found no effect of AOT on these primary clinical outcomes. Cochrane meta-analysis found the number needed to treat 142 court orders to prevent just one re-admission. The most recent global meta-analysis of available research—this is the Kisely et al study —found no significant impacts on violence or offending. And the Duke’s study’s arguably most robust finding was in fact a 45% increase in perceived coercion, with Black participants two times more likely to experience high coercion.”
